Necessary Angel has always made it a priority to direct resources to theatre artists in the pursuit of their artistic practice. In 2021, under the Artistic Directorship of Alan Dilworth, Necessary Angel launched the inaugural Artistic Residencies Program, which supports the voices of outstanding artists as they explore theatrical storytelling at the edge of their artistic practice. The residency includes a bursary for each artist, artistic and administrative support from Necessary Angel towards the development of new work, and regular peer-to-peer artistic roundtables. Our past artists in residence have included Alana Bridgewater, Deena H. Choi, Carlos Rivera, Michaela Washburn and Dian Marie Bridge.
The impact of these residencies has been significant for the participating artists and by connection, the communities they come from and those they serve.
